Understanding Volvo Hybrid Systems & How to Maintain Them

Posted on the 09/10/2025

Volvo has been at the forefront of automotive innovation for decades, and its hybrid models are no exception. From the XC60 Recharge to the S90 T8, these vehicles combine traditional reliability with forward-thinking efficiency. But owning a hybrid also means learning how to care for a more advanced system — and that’s where expert maintenance makes all the difference.

Volvo hybrids use a combination of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor to deliver smooth performance and reduced emissions. Mild hybrids (MHEVs) assist the engine with a small electric boost, while plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) offer all-electric driving for up to 50 miles.

Each system is engineered for efficiency, but proper care ensures you get the best from your investment for years to come.

The battery pack is at the heart of your Volvo hybrid. It’s designed to last the life of the vehicle, but only if maintained correctly. Avoid letting your charge drop too low for long periods, as lithium-ion cells prefer to stay between 20% and 80% capacity.

Plug-in hybrids should also be charged in a cool, dry environment. If you use a home charger, inspect cables regularly for wear and keep the charging port clean.

Many drivers assume hybrid systems need less maintenance, but that’s not quite true. The electric motor may reduce engine wear, but other components still need attention — especially brakes, fluids, and cooling systems.

For instance, regenerative braking reduces brake pad wear but can cause corrosion if the system isn’t used regularly. At Corner Garage Volvo, our hybrid servicing includes these checks, along with software updates and coolant inspections specific to hybrid systems.

Modern Volvos rely on software as much as hardware. Updates improve fuel efficiency, extend electric range, and fix known issues. During servicing, we connect your car to Volvo’s diagnostic systems to ensure every component — from the inverter to the battery cooling pump — is running at its best.

As independent Volvo specialists, we use the same diagnostic tools and parts as main dealers but offer a more flexible, affordable approach. Whether you drive a mild hybrid XC40 or a plug-in S60 Recharge, we’ll keep your system running efficiently without voiding your warranty.

Volvo hybrids are proof that sustainability and performance can coexist. With regular maintenance and expert care, your hybrid will remain efficient, powerful, and dependable for years — exactly as Volvo intended.

CAROL

Office Administrator

I’m the one in the background keeping everyone organised. I work part time but if you call, I might be the one booking your service or arranging a Volvo test drive.

I’ve worked here for a very long time and so I know the business inside and out, keeping an eye on all the paperwork, advertising, and social media.

SEAN

Mechanical Technician

I’ve been at Corner Garage for 25 years and tackled just about every issue a Volvo can throw my way. Whether you need a routine service, or a complex fault takes you off the road, I use my expertise to get you going quickly and safely.

We’re a friendly bunch so I’m not always hiding under a car. When you come in, you can meet the person working on your car, that’s me or Paul. And you’ll often find me speaking to customers, running diagnostics, or pitching in to get the job done.

PAUL

Diagnostic Technician

If one of those warning light flashes up on your dashboard, I’m the man you need. I’ve worked at Corner Garage for just over 10 years, working out your nagging car problems and fixing them.

I love working in a family run business, there are no targets like the big dealerships, what matters here is taking care of our customers. I’ve known some of our customers for years, and I’m always around for a bit of advice on their Volvo.

DARYL

Head of Garage

I took over Corner Garage in 2024, bringing my 35 years of experience in the motoring industry. Born and raised in Preston, I now spend a lot of time travelling the UK to source the best Volvos for our customers. When I’m not at the garage, I’m running Naze Lane Garage in Freckleton or acting as unofficial chauffeur for my kids.

I believe in doing things properly - no hidden charges, no dodgy cars, no pressure, and straightforward advice. I get a lot of satisfaction from finding high-quality cars and keeping them on the road.
