Your MOT: what to expect

An MOT is a statutory inspection of specified safety and environmental items. The checks depend on your vehicle’s age and type. It is not a service or a full assessment of the engine, clutch or gearbox, so regular Volvo maintenance still matters.

Your test result is recorded on the MOT database. If the car passes, you can ask for a printed certificate. The result may also identify minor defects or advisories to address or monitor. Major or dangerous defects mean a fail; repairs and a retest will be needed before a pass can be issued.

Plan your visit from Preston or the North West

Send us your registration, model, MOT expiry date and preferred day. Mention any dashboard warning lights, unusual noises or concerns when enquiring, so the team can discuss the appropriate next step and confirm availability before you travel.

If you already know about a fault, explore our Volvo diagnostics and Volvo repairs services. Any diagnosis, servicing or repair work is separate from the MOT inspection and should be agreed when booking.

Before your appointment

Check that your lights work, top up the screenwash and make sure the number plates are clean. Clear the boot and cabin so the tester can access the areas they need. Bring your keys, and let us know about any access or starting issues. These simple preparations help the visit run smoothly; they do not guarantee a pass.

Volvo MOT FAQs

When does my Volvo need its first MOT?

Most private cars in Great Britain need their first MOT by the third anniversary of registration, followed by an annual test. Different rules can apply to some vehicle uses. Check your car’s record if you are unsure.

How early can I book the MOT?

You can normally have the test up to one month minus one day before expiry and retain the existing renewal date. Testing earlier usually changes the next expiry date. Contact us in good time to discuss availability.

Is an MOT the same as a Volvo service?

No. An MOT checks specified items against minimum legal standards at the time of the test. A service is routine maintenance. An MOT does not assess the general condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox, and it does not replace the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.

What happens if my Volvo fails?

The result identifies the failed items. Major and dangerous defects result in a fail. Discuss the repairs needed and retest arrangements with the team. Do not drive a car with a dangerous defect. An existing certificate does not make an unsafe car legal to drive.

What do MOT advisories mean?

Advisories flag items that may need attention in future; they do not by themselves cause a test failure. Minor defects also do not normally mean a fail, but should be put right. Ask the team to explain the findings so you can plan maintenance sensibly.

Can I drive to an MOT if my certificate has expired?

You must not use or park the car on a public road with an expired MOT, apart from limited legal exceptions such as driving to a pre-arranged test or to or from repairs. The car must still be roadworthy and appropriately insured. If it is unsafe, discuss recovery instead of driving.

Can a retest be arranged after repairs?

Yes, discuss this with the test centre. Whether a partial or full retest is needed depends on the failed items, where the repairs take place and the time elapsed. Returning within 10 working days may qualify for a partial retest; ask about the arrangements before taking the car away.

What should I include in my booking enquiry?

Please provide your name, contact details, registration, Volvo model, current MOT expiry date and preferred day. Mention any warning lights or known faults. We will contact you to confirm availability; sending the form is an enquiry, not an automatic booking.

CAROL

Office Administrator

I’m the one in the background keeping everyone organised. I work part time but if you call, I might be the one booking your service or arranging a Volvo test drive.

I’ve worked here for a very long time and so I know the business inside and out, keeping an eye on all the paperwork, advertising, and social media.

SEAN

Mechanical Technician

I’ve been at Corner Garage for 25 years and tackled just about every issue a Volvo can throw my way. Whether you need a routine service, or a complex fault takes you off the road, I use my expertise to get you going quickly and safely.

We’re a friendly bunch so I’m not always hiding under a car. When you come in, you can meet the person working on your car, that’s me or Paul. And you’ll often find me speaking to customers, running diagnostics, or pitching in to get the job done.

PAUL

Diagnostic Technician

If one of those warning light flashes up on your dashboard, I’m the man you need. I’ve worked at Corner Garage for just over 10 years, working out your nagging car problems and fixing them.

I love working in a family run business, there are no targets like the big dealerships, what matters here is taking care of our customers. I’ve known some of our customers for years, and I’m always around for a bit of advice on their Volvo.

DARYL

Head of Garage

I took over Corner Garage in 2024, bringing my 35 years of experience in the motoring industry. Born and raised in Preston, I now spend a lot of time travelling the UK to source the best Volvos for our customers. When I’m not at the garage, I’m running Naze Lane Garage in Freckleton or acting as unofficial chauffeur for my kids.

I believe in doing things properly - no hidden charges, no dodgy cars, no pressure, and straightforward advice. I get a lot of satisfaction from finding high-quality cars and keeping them on the road.
