Buying a used Volvo: a viewing guide for Preston and the Fylde
· 4 minute read
A used car can look right in photographs and still leave you with questions when you see it. Will the boot take the pushchair? Does the driving position suit you? What does the service history actually tell you?

If you are looking for a used Volvo around Preston and the Fylde, a little preparation can make a viewing much more useful. Before travelling to our garage in Warton, work through these checks and bring your questions with you.
Start with the journeys you actually make
Think about an ordinary week rather than the occasional holiday. You might drive into Preston for work, make short trips around Warton and Freckleton, or regularly carry family and luggage further afield.
Write down three things your next car must do well. These might be fitting your usual passengers comfortably, making parking easier or carrying bulky equipment without folding the rear seats.
Then separate those essentials from the extras you would enjoy. Heated seats may be a welcome addition, but they will not solve a boot that is too small for your everyday needs.
Ask for the details before setting off
Confirm that the car is still available and arrange a suitable time to view it. Ask for its registration, exact engine and gearbox specification, and a summary of the service records available.
You can use the registration to check its MOT history on GOV.UK. The service shows recorded test mileages, pass and fail results, and information about defects and advisories. Use it to prepare questions about work carried out since earlier tests.
For example, if a previous test mentioned a tyre or suspension component, ask whether there is an invoice showing what happened next. A dated record is more useful than an assumption that everything must have been dealt with.
Look beyond the number of service stamps
A service book is a starting point. Look at the dates and mileages, then ask to see supporting invoices where available. These can help explain what was included at each visit and whether additional work was carried out.
Useful questions include:
- When was the most recent service, and what did it cover?
- Is there evidence of any major maintenance already completed?
- What is the next scheduled maintenance for this particular engine and gearbox?
- Are there gaps in the records that need explaining?
Avoid relying on a maintenance interval quoted for a different Volvo. The right schedule needs to match the individual car.
Bring the things the car needs to carry
Boot capacity figures cannot tell you whether your particular pushchair or luggage will fit conveniently. Bring awkward items, or take their measurements if that is more practical.
With permission, try the seating arrangement you will actually use. Adjust the driver’s seat first, then check the space behind it. If child seats are part of your routine, check compatibility and fitting instructions for the exact seats and vehicle.
Also look at the less obvious details: the height of the boot opening, the reach needed to close the tailgate, and how easily passengers can get in and out.
Make the test drive representative
Agree a test drive with the seller and ask about the arrangements before your visit. A useful route should give you time to judge visibility, low-speed manoeuvring and comfort, rather than simply taking a quick turn around the block.
Take a moment to adjust the seat and mirrors before moving off. Pay attention to how the car feels in the situations you encounter most often. If parking is a concern, ask to try a suitable manoeuvre. Check the equipment you expect to use, including the heating, air conditioning and phone connection.
Raise anything you do not understand while you are there. You should leave knowing which questions have been answered and which need a follow-up.
Get the handover details clear
Before deciding, ask what preparation is included, what documentation and keys come with the car, and what any advertised warranty covers. Request the relevant terms in writing rather than assuming every vehicle comes with the same package.
Keep a short note of your impressions after the viewing. Comparing two cars is easier when you can remember more than the paint colour and asking price.
